In a groundbreaking move, Meta has announced the launch of two monetisation features for content creators in Kenya. This development will enable Kenyan Facebook creators to earn money from their original videos, marking a significant milestone for the country’s digital content industry.
President William Ruto has urged content creators to seize this opportunity to monetise their videos on Meta platforms. He emphasized that his administration is committed to creating more opportunities for the youth to explore and showcase their talents.
“This is a golden opportunity for our young creators to turn their passion into a source of income. My administration will continue to seek more avenues for our youth to thrive in the digital economy,” President Ruto stated.
The two monetisation features, In-Stream Ads on Facebook and Facebook Ads on Reels, were officially announced yesterday. These features will allow eligible content creators to earn money by producing original videos and building their communities on Facebook12.
In-Stream Ads can appear before, during, or after on-demand videos, including pre-recorded content and recordings of previous live streams. This includes various ad formats such as Pre-roll Ads, Mid-roll Ads, Image Ads, and Post-roll Ads1.
Facebook Ads on Reels will integrate seamlessly into original Reels, with creators earning based on the performance of their content.
Meta’s Global Partnerships Lead for Africa, Middle East, and Türkiye, Moon Baz, highlighted the impact of this initiative: “Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others, and bring people together. This expansion will empower eligible creators in Kenya’s vibrant creative industry to earn money, setting a high bar for creativity worldwide and making Meta’s family of apps the one-stop-shop for all creators.”
To qualify for these monetisation features, creators must comply with Facebook’s Partner Monetisation Policies and Content Monetisation Policies. Additionally, they must have a minimum of 5,000 followers and be at least 18 years old.
This initiative follows President Ruto’s earlier discussions with Meta and content creators, where he announced that social platforms under the Meta brand would start paying Kenyan digital creators through M-Pesa.
With these new features, Kenyan content creators are poised to transform their creative efforts into sustainable income streams, further boosting the country’s digital economy.
