With the Azimio la Umoja alliance threatening to file an impeachment resolution against him, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is in the midst of a political tempest. Wetangula has been accused by the opposition coalition of being inconsistent and biased in his decisions, especially with reference to the status of 14 MPs who left Azimio after making post-election deals with Kenya Kwanza.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo revealed that an Azimio MP is ready to bring the impeachment motion to the floor. According to Odhiambo, the High Court ruled that Wetang’ula could not continue serving as both the leader of Ford Kenya and the Speaker of the National Assembly simultaneously. She suggested that Wetang’ula could avoid impeachment by choosing between the two roles.

Starehe MP Amos Mwago also threatened to file an impeachment motion if Wetang’ula does not resign. Mwago criticized Wetang’ula for his handling of the 2024 Finance Bill, which led to nationwide strikes, and accused him of incompetence.

The opposition coalition has also taken issue with Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss for seeking details on post-election agreements from the Registrar of Political Parties. Minority Leader Junet Mohammed accused Wetang’ula of manipulating numbers to ensure Kenya Kwanza remains the majority in Parliament.

Despite the mounting pressure, Wetang’ula has defended his position, insisting that the court’s decision did not declare any political entity as the majority in Parliament. He argued that it is the Speaker’s responsibility to make such a determination.

As the political drama unfolds, Wetang’ula’s future hangs in the balance. The Azimio coalition is determined to see him impeached, while Western MPs have thrown their weight behind him, vowing to quash any impeachment calls.

The coming days will be crucial as the National Assembly grapples with this contentious issue. Will Wetang’ula step down, or will he face the impeachment motion head-on? Only time will tell.
