Generation Z, is the generation that comes after Millennials and before Generation Alpha. It is also known as Gen Z in short form.

Gen Z is typically defined by academics and the media as people who were born between the middle of the late 1990s and the early 2010s. Because they were raised with constant access to social media, mobile technology, and the internet, this generation is referred to as digital natives.

In Kenya, Gen Z has been making headlines for their active involvement in political demonstrations.

Recently, young Kenyans have taken to the streets in what has been termed as “Gen-Z demonstrations” or protests.

These protests have been particularly focused on opposing proposed tax hikes in the Finance Bill of 2024.

As Kenyan youngsters sought out direct involvement in the movement, traditional modes of protest gave way to the “Occupy Parliament” movement.

Young Kenyans expressed their displeasure with the bill on social media, sparking the start of the demonstrations, which soon spread to the city’s streets. It was more than just a demonstration; it was the young people’s united and determined effort to be heard and to affect change.

The involvement of Gen Z in these protests is significant as it marks a departure from passive online engagement to active physical demonstration.

It’s a clear indication that this generation is not content with being mere spectators but are willing to be at the forefront of advocating for their rights and for a better future.

These demonstrations have not only been about voicing concerns over economic policies but have also showcased the creativity and individuality of Gen Z.

The streets were transformed into a runway of protest fashion, with young activists dressed in trendy outfits, accessorized with statement pieces, marching through the city chanting slogans and demanding change.

The emergence of Generation Z in Kenya’s political sphere is evidence of their increasing power and ability to affect the nation’s destiny.

It is evident that they are a force to be reckoned with as they continue to mobilize and voice their opinions, adding fresh ideas and perspectives to the discussion.

In conclusion, Gen Z in Kenya represents a vibrant and dynamic force that is redefining activism in the digital age. Their recent demonstrations are just one example of how they are using their collective voice to challenge the status quo and make an impact on society.
