Nairobi, Kenya– In a harrowing discovery that has sent shockwaves through the community, multiple bodies have been retrieved from the Mukuru kwa Njenga dumpsite. The grim find has raised serious concerns about safety and security in the area.
On Friday, July 12, 2024, locals stumbled upon the decomposing remains of several individuals at the Kware dumpsite in Mukuru kwa Njenga. The bodies, wrapped in sacks and tied with ropes, were found in various stages of decomposition. Initial reports indicated that the bodies were all female and showed signs of severe mutilation.
The retrieval operation was led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide team, with assistance from local volunteers. One notable volunteer, Kyallo Jilani Wambua, a trained plant operator, risked his life to help retrieve the bodies. Wambua, who has previously assisted in similar operations, expressed his desire to join the Kenya Navy or Red Cross as a permanent rescuer.
The discovery has sparked outrage and fear among residents. Many have taken to social media to commend the bravery of the volunteers and to call for better security measures. Joseph Chege, a local resident, commented, “I hope he doesn’t experience nightmares. Hail bro, that was brave, courageous, and strong.” Another resident, Mark Chaplain, added, “Kenya should have a disaster, rescue, and body recovery team with special equipment paid for by our taxes. This is a total failure of the current system”.
The DCI has launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the dumping of the bodies. Preliminary findings suggest a similar mode of killing for all the deceased. The bodies have been transferred to the City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations and identification.
Human rights groups have called for immediate action to address the security issues in Mukuru kwa Njenga. They have urged the government to establish a dedicated disaster and rescue team equipped with the necessary tools to handle such situations. The community is also demanding justice for the victims and their families.
The shocking discovery at the Mukuru kwa Njenga dumpsite has highlighted the urgent need for improved security and emergency response measures in Nairobi’s informal settlements. As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, hoping for swift justice and better protection in the future.
