On September 11, 2025, President William Ruto visited the ongoing construction site of the Talanta Sports City Stadium in Nairobi, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The 60,000-seater stadium, located at Jamhuri Grounds, is on track to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, positioning it as the premier venue for the continental tournament.
In a post on his X account, President Ruto highlighted the stadium’s significance, stating, “Talanta Stadium is on course. Built to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, it will serve as the premier venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and other major sporting events.” He emphasized that the facility will not only host football and rugby but also serve as a hub for concerts, cultural festivals, and national celebrations, boosting Kenya’s sporting and creative economy.
The Talanta Stadium, under construction by the China Road and Bridge Corporation and supervised by the Kenya Defence Forces, is designed with state-of-the-art features, including a hybrid grass pitch, LED floodlighting, and advanced media facilities. With a projected completion date of December 2025, the stadium is expected to host AFCON’s opening and closing ceremonies, marking a historic moment for Kenya as a co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
President Ruto’s visit affirms the government’s broader vision to transform Kenya into a global sports powerhouse. The stadium’s development, alongside renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums, reflects a strategic push to modernize infrastructure and nurture grassroots talent. The project, funded by a KSh 44.8 billion infrastructure bond, has garnered significant investor confidence, further solidifying Kenya’s readiness for AFCON 2027.
