Kenyan intern doctors can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have reached a significant agreement. After 56 days of a grueling strike, an addendum to the return-to-work formula was signed, paving the way for immediate posting of 1,210 intern doctors.
The agreement marks a crucial step in addressing the shortage of medical personnel in the country and ensuring that medical graduates receive the practical training required for their professional development. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with KMPDU, has been working tirelessly to resolve ongoing disputes and enhance the working conditions for healthcare professionals.
Here are the key details:
- Immediate Posting: Following successful negotiations, the Ministry of Health will post 1,210 intern doctors to begin their twelve-month internships by August 1, 2024. This move aims to address the severe impact the strike had on the health sector.
- Revocation of Offer Letters: The Ministry has revoked the Internship Offer Letters issued on March 18, 2024, ensuring a fresh start for the interns.
- Terms of Engagement: Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni chaired the discussions and emphasized that the terms of engagement for the intern doctors would adhere to the conditions outlined in their internship placement letters.
- Remuneration: The issue of salaries for medical interns remains unresolved due to ongoing court deliberations. However, the PS assured that all arrears accrued before the court’s decision would be paid in full within 90 days of the ruling.
- Presidential Taskforce: A newly established Presidential Taskforce will address issues related to Human Resources for Health Internship and provide recommendations.
The KMPDU officials, led by Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, deserve commendation for their dedication and constructive engagement throughout this process. With this breakthrough, Kenya’s healthcare system can move forward, ensuring better care for all.
Remember, this agreement comes after a long-standing doctors’ strike that lasted 56 days, and it signifies a positive turning point for medical interns and the entire health sector.
