CS Chirchir Confirms Adani Group’s Proposal to Take Over KETRACO

CS Chirchir Reveals Details on Controversial Adani-JKIA Deal

In a recent interview on Citizen TV, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir confirmed that the Adani Group has presented a proposal to take over certain operations of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). This revelation comes amid ongoing discussions about the Indian conglomerate’s interest in Kenya’s infrastructure projects.

CS Chirchir disclosed that the Adani Group’s proposal is currently under review and has not yet been finalized. The proposal involves the Adani Group taking over the operation of specific power lines, including the Gilgil-Thika-Malaa electricity line. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and reliability of Kenya’s power transmission network.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the proposal is still in the evaluation phase and must pass through a comprehensive 20-stage approval process before any agreements are made. This process ensures that all aspects of the proposal are thoroughly examined to safeguard Kenya’s national interests.

CS Chirchir also highlighted the prevalence of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the energy sector, noting that there are currently over 150 proposals from various companies for energy generation and transmission projects. The Adani Group’s proposal is one of many being considered to improve the country’s energy infrastructure.

The news of Adani Group’s interest in KETRACO has sparked mixed reactions among stakeholders and the public. While some see it as an opportunity to boost the efficiency of Kenya’s power transmission, others are concerned about the implications of foreign control over critical national infrastructure.
