In a forceful rejection of the proposed Finance Bill 2024, key Azimio leaders, spearheaded by DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, have criticized the bill for its punitive measures. The bill, designed to raise revenue, has faced backlash for its potential adverse effects across various sectors.
National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed stressed that the opposition would mobilize its MPs to completely reject the Finance Bill. He described the proposed legislation as draconian, arguing that it contradicts Kenya Kwanza’s pledge to reduce the cost of living. Despite significant taxation, the economy has failed to achieve the expected growth, raising concerns about the bill’s implications for citizens.
Echoing these concerns, Kalonzo Musyoka, a principal of Azimio La Umoja, voiced his disapproval during a Parliamentary Group meeting. He warned that the bill’s harsh tax proposals on essential goods would heavily burden the population. Kalonzo urged the government to reconsider the bill or face nationwide mass protests against the new law.
Additionally, Azimio leaders have called on foreign powers to intervene in response to the proposed budget for 2024/2025, labeling it as misguided. They have appealed for the international community’s involvement to address their concerns.
As the debate over the Finance Bill continues, MPs are confronted with a pivotal decision: to support or reject the bill. The outcome of their vote will significantly influence Kenya’s economic future.
