Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja faces a looming impeachment as over 84 MCAs have signed a motion to oust him, surpassing the required threshold. The signatures, collected today, signal a major blow to Sakaja, who has been abandoned by his long-time ally, ODM leader Raila Odinga.Once dubbed Sakaja’s “political godfather,” Odinga reportedly distanced himself during a tense meeting at his Karen home on Friday.
Sources say he urged MCAs to hold Sakaja accountable, leaving the governor without his key protector. The impeachment motion lists over 20 charges, including stalled ward projects, delayed bursaries, and failure to engage with MCAs. Both UDA and ODM assembly members are united in their frustration, accusing Sakaja of being “out of touch.”
A special assembly sitting is expected by Tuesday, with organizers aiming for 100 signatures to strengthen their case. If passed, the motion heads to the Senate, where Sakaja will defend himself.Sakaja’s camp calls Odinga’s withdrawal a “betrayal,” noting his past interventions saved the governor from similar threats. Without ODM’s backing, Sakaja faces a tough battle to survive politically.
Nairobians await the outcome as the city grapples with service delivery woes. A by-election could follow within 60 days if the impeachment succeeds, reshaping the county’s leadership.
